College Study Tips
totoro-the-engineer:
Hi everyone! I just wanted to post some study tips that I should have learned years ago lol. Hopefully it helps!
1. Segment your study times.
Often times it is very difficult to process information from several different classes in one sitting. Try segmenting out times for each class. So lets say you have Class A, Class B, and Class C. Each class you have something to study, and then homework.
Try studying for Class A first, and then take a 10 minute break. During this break don’t think of your study material at all, just relax and do something fun. The point is to clear your mind a bit.
Then do the homework for class A. Repeat for Class B and Class C.
2. Finish each segment in one sitting.
It’s difficult to prioritize school and studying when there’s so much else to do. However, if you can finish your reading in one sitting, and then your homework in one sitting it’s much more satisfying and you have more time to do other activities.
3. Block out a study period.
In order to segment and do your studying in one sitting, block out times to do everything. This way you’re organized and have a set goal in mind.
4. Finish your work first.
Sometimes it seems like studying can go on forever, and there’s no end in sight. Honestly, the work doesn’t take as long as you think, if you can finish all your work first, then you’ll have plenty of time to do whatever you want later.
5. Put your phone/computer away while you study.
This is honestly the hardest one for me. Plenty of times I, or others, say I’ve been studying for 5 hours! Really, what happened is you studied for 30 minutes to an hour between playing on your phone or computer. Only take your phone out during this study block when you take a break.
Putting away these distractions, will help a lot with finishing your work fast, and processing information while studying.
You definitely don’t need your phone while you study, however a lot of work needs a computer. If you can use your computer and turn the wifi off.
If you need wifi, try installing one of those apps that block certain sites for a set period of time.
6. Put your phone/computer away in class.
One of the biggest mistakes I have made is assuming I can mess around in class, and then learn the material later.
Pay attention in class, make this your learning time, that way you don’t have to waste time later trying to relearn the basics. The exceptions to tip 5 apply here too.
7. Don’t multitask.
Watching netflix and studying don’t mix lol.
8. The book and syllabus are your friends.
Let’s be honest, some professors are shit. But you can still learn! Look through your syllabus and see what chapters the class will cover.
And read the book! Seriously it helps with learning and understanding the material.
However, often times homework and exams are based on lecture, so cross reference book material with lecture to study smarter and more efficiently.
9. Plan out projects and long assignments.
If you have an essay due in two weeks, or a project due in three it’s easy to put it off. Try to do a little bit of the project each day, make a plan and plan out what to do each day, that way you’re not stressed when the night before the due date comes.
10. DON’T PROCRASTINATE.
Just don’t do it.
11. Be aware of your saturation point.
The reason studying last minute sucks is because there comes a point you can’t absorb anymore information.
The mind is like a sponge, it will absorb information until it cannot any longer. Once you reach this point STOP, don’t think about school for a bit. During this period your sponge will drain into “a cup” of long term memory. Once you feel your head clear resume studying again.
12. Plan!
Like with the projects, plan your studying before an exam. Try to plan it some you don’t have to do any studying the night before. Each day try to cover a section, do some problems, etc.
13. Take time to yourself.
The most important thing is to take some time to yourself in between studying, make sure your physical and mental health are good.
14. Remember it takes hard work, and it hard, but you can do it.
*These are not universal, they work for me and might work for someone else.
